Child Dedication Sunday

The dedication of a child is a statement of intent entered into by the child’s parents and the church family. For the parents, it is the moment when they publicly give the child back to a loving God for the working out of His perfect will in that child’s life. They promise to raise the child under the Lordship of Christ, that he or she may at some future time personally accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

For the church, it is the moment when they witness the parents’ promises and also pledge their own love and prayers, agreeing to support the parents in the spiritual education of the child.

In the Old Testament book of 1st Samuel, Hannah presented her son Samuel to the Lord. In the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem in order to present Him before the Lord. Similarly, parents today come to present themselves as parents and their children as sons and daughters before the Lord our God.

As the Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6 (NLT), “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.”
